Hasanul Haq Inu, president of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, was defeated by 19,161 votes in the 12th parliamentary elections held on Sunday. Inu who contested from Kushtia-2 (Mirpur-Bheramara) seat with the Awami League’s electoral symbol Boat got 79,735 votes.

Bangladesh Workers Party President and Boat candidate for Barisal-2 constituency Rashed Khan Menon has secured victory, as per the unofficial count. Menon received 124,573 votes across 136 centres in the constituency. His nearest competitor was independent candidate AK Fayezul Haque Raju (Eagle symbol) with 32,019 votes, putting the margin of victory at 92,554 votes.

Popular social media personality Ashraful Hossen Alom, better known as Hero Alom, has boycotted the 12th national parliamentary election alleging various irregularities. Awami League-nominated candidate Kazi Nabil Ahmed has managed a resounding victory in the Jessore-3 constituency in the 12th national parliamentary election. According to the results obtained from a total of 189 centres, he secured 121,720 votes with the Boat symbol. His nearest rival, independent candidate and Sadar upazila Awami League President Mohit Kumar Nath, got 64,511 votes with the Eagle symbol.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has been re-elected for the fifth time in Noakhali-5 seat by a huge margin. Obaidul Quader bagged 181,279 votes while his nearest contender managed to secure only 9,702 ballots with the Plough symbol.

Voting in national polls ends with largely peaceful atmosphere
Authorities started tallying ballots after voting ended in the 12th national polls in Bangladesh on Sunday amidst a largely peaceful environment. Voting began at 8am at 261,912 polling booths in 42,024 voting centres and continued until 4pm with 299 parliamentary seats up for election. However, centres, where people are still waiting to exercise their franchise, will continue to accept votes. Polls were deferred in one seat at the death of a candidate. The Election Commission said 27% of votes were cast in the first seven hours, from 8am to 3pm.
