Voting was cancelled at a polling centre in Nayaranganj’s Araihazar Upazila following a clash between the activists of the Awami League and the Jatiya Party candidates on Sunday.

Earlier, at least two people were shot when police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control at Ramchandradi Government Primary School at around 10am.

So far, 13 people, including the brother of the Jatiya Party candidate for the seat, have been detained following the incident, said Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mahmudul Haque.

The Awami League candidate is Nazrul Islam Babu while Jatiya Party nominated Alamgir Sikder in the seat.

Quoting witnesses, law enforcers said two agents of Boat and Eagle symbols were casting fake votes at the centre. The clash ensued when Jatiya Party activists protested the incident.

At that time, the villagers also got involved in the clash and police opened fire to control the situation.

After the clash, Narayanganj deputy commissioner and superintendent of police visited the spot.

DC Mahmudul said some people led by Jatiya Party candidate Alamgir Sikder and his brother Jahangir Sikder vandalized the centre and ballot boxes alleging fake votes.

At around 11am, Alamgir Sikder announced to boycott the polls at a press conference.
