Hero Alom boycotts polls

  • Alleges various irregularities
  • ‘Found vote rigging in all centres’

Popular social media personality Ashraful Hossen Alom, better known as Hero Alom, has boycotted the 12th national parliamentary election alleging various irregularities. 

On Sunday evening, he posted a status on his official Facebook page saying: "Due to various irregularities, Hero Alom has boycotted this election."

He was contesting the election as a candidate for the Bangladesh Congress with the Coconut symbol in the Bogura-4 constituency.

Hero Alom's assistant Sujan Rahman Shuvo confirmed the election boycott to the media.

Hero Alom said: "After visiting several polling centres today (Sunday), I found vote rigging in almost all of the centres. Therefore, I have decided to boycott this election."

In Bogra-4 constituency, six candidates, including the Boat candidate, are competing. There are 344,514 voters in this constituency with 114 polling centres.

The voting for the 12th national parliamentary election began at 8am Sunday and continued until 4pm.

Several political parties, including the BNP, have boycotted the election. 

However, 1,534 candidates from 28 political parties contested, along with 436 independent candidates.

According to the Election Commission, there are 266 candidates from the Awami League, 265 from the Jatiya Party, 135 from Trinamool BNP, 66 from the National Socialist Party (JSD), 122 from the National People's Party, 13 from Jatiya Party (JaPa), and 10 candidates from Bikalpadhara Bangladesh.
