Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Monday said that 41.8% of votes were cast in the 12th national parliamentary election.
Talking to reporters at the Nirbachan Bhaban, the CEC emphasized that anyone with doubts about the results could challenge them.
Earlier, an election observation team, including the ambassador of Japan, met the CEC and thanked him for conducting the election in a beautiful environment.
CEC Awal said: “The complete information about the 12th national election has come to us. Now the total vote is 41.8%."
During a press conference on the polling day, he mentioned a preliminary estimate of 40% voter turnout, acknowledging that the final figure might vary.
Explaining the calculation process, he mentioned: "When the results of the total of 298 seats started coming, when you add them up, a sum comes out. It’s not a difficult task. Throwing this sum into Excel yields a percentage."
Of the 298 seats, the ruling Awami League won 222, Jatiya Party 11, Bangladesh Workers Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, and Bangladesh Kallyan Party won one each, and independent candidates won 61 seats.
The CEC said the election in Naogaon-2 constituency was cancelled due to the death of an independent candidate. Besides, the results of the Mymensingh-3 constituency have been postponed due to the cancellation of the election of one centre.
The results of this seat will be declared after voting in that centre on Saturday.
