Jamalpur gets 3 new faces as MPs

Ex-state minister Murad Hasan suffers defeat in Jamalpur-4

Four Awami League-backed candidates in five constituencies of Jamalpur have secured victory in the 12th national parliamentary polls. 

Out of them three of the winning candidates have been elected as MPs for the first time.

One of the notable defeats was incumbent MP and former state minister Dr Murad Hassan’s (Eagle). Participating in the election as an independent candidate from Jamalpur-4, he was defeated by another independent candidate Md Abdur Rashid (Truck).

Jamalpur Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Md Sofiur Rahaman announced the election results in his meeting room on Sunday night. 

In Jamalpur-1, Awami League candidate Nur Mohammad, contesting a general election for the first time, bagged 228,247 votes with the Boat symbol while his nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate SM Abu Sayem got 6,070 votes. 

In Jamalpur-2, with the Boat symbol, Awami League candidate State Minister for Religious Affairs Md Faridul Haque Khan secured victory with 70,762 votes. His nearest rival independent candidate SM Sahinuzzaman got 30,548 votes.

In Jamalpur- 3, Awami League candidate Mirza Azam, the party’s organizing secretary, secured victory with 276,453 votes while his nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate Mir Shamshul Alam Lipton got 7,470 votes. 

In Jamalpur- 4, with the Truck symbol, independent candidate Md Abdur Rashid was elected an MP with 50,678 votes while his nearest rival Awami League party candidate with Boat symbol, Md Mahbubur Rahman Helal, got 47,638 votes. 

Former Awami League state minister Dr Murad Hasan bagged 37,433 votes as an independent candidate. 

In Jamalpur-5, Awami League candidate Md Abul Kalam Azad, in the parliamentary election race for the first time, emerged victorious with 215,889 votes while his nearest rival, independent candidate with the Eagle symbol and district Awami League member Md Rezaul Karim, got 65,249 votes.
