Barguna-1: 2 polling agents sentenced to 1 year in jail for using mobile phones

A mobile court has sentenced two polling agents to one year in jail in the Burirchar union of Barguna-1 (Sadar) constituency for using mobile phones. 

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid sentenced the agent of the Mango symbol Mokhlesur Rahman and the Truck symbol’s agent Monir for entering the Hazarbigha Government Primary School polling centre with their devices at around 12pm. 

Barguna Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shamim Mia confirmed the matter. 

Earlier, a mobile court sentenced a man to six months in jail for casting fake votes in Barguna-1 seat.

The man, Sabet Hossain, 28, was caught redhanded at a polling centre in Barguna Sadar upazila at around 10am on Sunday. 

Judge Abu Saleh Md Arman Bhuiyan passed the order, said Abdus Salam, presiding officer of Porirkhal Secondary School polling centre.

Bangladesh’s 119.6 million voters are casting their ballots for the 12th national parliamentary election.

Voting began at 8am on Sunday at 261,912 polling booths in 42,024 voting centre and will continue until 4pm with 299 parliamentary seats up for election. Polls were deferred in one seat at the death of a candidate.    

With the ruling Awami League and its alliance looking confident to win the election for a fourth straight term, its arch-rival BNP and like-minded parties called for a hartal on the day.
