Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed on Sunday said the troops will stay on the field as long as the Election Commission wants.
Talking to reporters at Mirpur Cantonment Public School and College centre in the capital, he said: “I cast my vote in a very peaceful atmosphere.”
Gen Shafiuddin came to the polling station along with his family members around 10:30am.

Asked how many days the army will be on election duty and how they will deal with post-polls violence, the army chief said: “As you know, we have been directed to stay on the field until January 10. If there is violence after the election, the Army will perform their duties with complete professionalism and neutrality, Inshallah.”
He added that the troops are performing their duties with complete professionalism.
“The voting is going on very peacefully in almost all the centres that I have visited so far and as seen in the media,” said the army chief.
