At least 10 people were injured in clashes between the followers of the Awami League and an independent candidate in Madaripur-3 constituency’s Ghatakchar area on Sunday afternoon.
Several houses were vandalized and set on fire during the clashes.
According to local sources, Akbar Matubbar, a follower of Awami League candidate Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap, allegedly prevented people from voting at the Ghatakchar Multipurpose High School polling centre. Followers of Independent candidate Tahmina Begum immediately protested the incident.

During this time, there was extreme tension between the people of both sides. As the news spread, people from both sides gathered in front of the polling station with improvised weapons. Later, there was a chase and counter-chase.
Four people were injured in the incident.
On information, the army, BGB, RAB and additional police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later in the afternoon, people from both sides again clashed with locally made weapons. Several houses were set on fire at that time, and there are also allegations of house vandalism and looting.
Upon being informed, law enforcers again rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Madaripur Kamrul Hasan said: “Police with the help of the executive magistrate brought the situation under control after being informed of the incident of tension and chase-counter-chase between the two groups. Army, BGB and law enforcers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.”
The candidates in the constituency are Awami League's Abdus Sobhan Mia Golap, independent candidate Tahmina Begum, Jatiya Party's Md Abdul Khalek, Trinamool BNP's Prabin Halder, Bangladesh Supreme Party's Nitai Chakraborty, and Nakul Kumar Biswas of Krishak Sramik Janata League.
