Sports arena pays tribute to Kazi Shahid Ahmed

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, Bangladesh Cricket Board, Bangladesh Football Federation, Abahani Limited Dhaka and Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association, among many others, expressed deep grief and sadness at the passing of Kazi Shahid Ahmed, eminent sports organizer, noted entrepreneur, and publisher who breathed his last Monday evening in Dhaka. He was 82. 

The aforementioned organizations extended their deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Kazi Shahid Ahmed. 

The ­first namaz-e-janaza of the late Kazi Shahid Ahmed was held after Zuhr prayers on Tuesday at Baitul Aman Mosque in Dhanmondi where his eldest son, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, requested everyone to pray for his late father. 

His second namaz-e-janaza was held at the Abahani ­field. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advisor Salman F Rahman was present there. 

His third namaz-e-janaza was held at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asr prayers. He was then laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard. 

Born in 1940 in Jessore, Kazi Shahid Ahmed’s enduring legacy is woven into his multifaceted contributions to diverse ­fields. 

As the founder and chairman of the Gemcon Group, he left an indelible mark on the business landscape. 

Beyond entrepreneurship, he was a driving force behind establishing Bangladesh’s inaugural organic tea estate. 

Survived by his wife, Ameenah Ahmed, a distinguished Rabindra Sangeet artiste, and three sons, Kazi Shahid Ahmed’s innovative spirit extended beyond business. 

He pioneered modern journalism in Bangladesh as the founder and editor of the daily Ajker Kagoj. 

His eldest son, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, serves as a member of parliament from the Awami League and vice president of the BFF. 

His second son Kazi Anis Ahmed is the publisher of Dhaka Tribune and Bangla Tribune. 

Kazi Inam Ahmed, his youngest son, holds the position of director at the BCB.
