He surrendered after police failed to find him during an operation earlier this month

A listed criminal who eluded police during an operation earlier this month has surrendered to a court in Chittagong in an extortion case, with the court rejecting his bail petition and ordering him sent to jail.

Wakil Hossain alias Boga, a leader of a “teen gang” listed by Chittagong Metropolitan Police, surrendered on Sunday.

Wakil surrendered and sought bail before the court of Chittagong Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahidul Islam on Sunday afternoon. After the hearing, the court rejected his application and ordered his detention in jail.

Hasan Iqbal Chowdhury, deputy commissioner (prosecution) of CMP, confirmed the information to Dhaka Tribune. He said Wakil Hossain Boga had surrendered and sought bail in an extortion case, but the court ordered him sent to jail after the hearing.

Wakil was a former joint convener of the city unit of Swechchhasebak Dal. He was expelled from the party on June 8 over allegations of activities contrary to party discipline.

He faces 23 cases involving allegations including murder, arms, drugs, extortion and land grabbing. Police claim that Wakil controlled several teen gangs and used his political influence to carry out criminal activities.

On October 6, police went to the Chittagong City Corporation building in the city's Tigerpass area after receiving information that Wakil was there. However, they failed to find him during the operation.

The following day, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain said Wakil had not been inside the city corporation building and that his 2 brothers had come to meet him. At the time, the mayor described Wakil as a “July warrior” rather than a criminal and made several allegations against then Khulshi police station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rahim.

Abdur Rahim was subsequently removed from Khulshi police station and transferred to the metropolitan police's CTSB branch. The following day, he was transferred from Chittagong to the Khulna Police Training Centre.
