Bangladesh’s first four-lane cycle track has been inaugurated in Chittagong to ease traffic congestion and promote an environmentally friendly transport system.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury formally inaugurated the track on Friday morning.
Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain was also present at the inauguration.
Built under the city corporation’s “Chittagong Airport Road Expansion and Other Physical Infrastructure Development” project, the road stretches about 2.2km and has four lanes. A median has been constructed in the middle using kerbstones, while a cycle track runs alongside a landscaped walkway on one side.
The initiative aims to ensure safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport for city residents and tourists.
The separate lane is expected to improve cyclists’ safety and expand opportunities for eco-friendly travel in the city. It is also expected to encourage residents to adopt healthier and more active lifestyles, the city mayor said.
