Saiful Alam Member, the second-in-command to Shimul Bhuiyan, a leader of the defunct extremist group Purba Bangla Communist Party, has been arrested by detectives in connection with the recent murder of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar.

The Detective Branch nabbed Saiful, 48, son of Abul Kashem Mollah from Dattagati village under ward No 9 of Payra union in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore, during a raid at Adarsha Matsya Hatchery in the Raypara Bablatala area of the district at around 9:30pm on Tuesday, reports UNB.

During the arrest, police recovered a mobile phone with an Indian SIM card and materials for making explosives from Saiful's possession.

According to the DB, Saiful had been hiding at the hatchery for several days.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Mofizul Islam with Jessore DB said the arrestee is an associate of Shimul Bhuiyan. Saiful is an accused listed in chargesheets for the murders of Uday Shankar, Rakib and Subrata in Jessore, and is also a fugitive in one of these cases.

When the investigation into MP Anar's murder began, Saiful went into hiding. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted the raid on Tuesday and arrested him at the hatchery, he said.

The DB officer said Saiful had been in the Satkhira and India border areas recently and maintained contact with Shimul Bhuiyan using an Indian mobile phone number.

The authorities are investigating his involvement in MP Anar's murder, he said, declining to reveal more details for the sake of the investigation.

The Jhenaidah-4 MP crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas stated that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if necessary.

Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.

Based on information provided by Indian police, detectives in Bangladesh arrested three individuals. They were also taken into remand for interrogation.

The three are Amanullah Said alias Shimul Bhuiyan, 56, Tanvir Bhuiya, 30, and Shilasti Rahman, 22.
