The Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) chief Md Harunor Rashid said that several political leaders in Jhenaidah are under surveillance in connection with the murder of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar.
He said these things to the journalists at Minto Road in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
The DMP chief said: “The investigation is ongoing to determine who the accused may have shared information with and whether anyone benefited financially from the incident. All aspects are being thoroughly investigated.”
When questioned about the surveillance of some Awami League leaders from Jhenaidah, one of whom has been arrested and remanded, Harunor Rashid confirmed: “The case is under investigation. There are ongoing cases both in Bangladesh and India with the same objective. We are actively working on it and have spoken to the accused.”
He added: "After analyzing all the facts and data, we determined that Awami League leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu alias Gas Babu needed to be interrogated. Consequently, we arrested him and placed him on remand. The Wari Division of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police is currently handling the investigation."
Regarding allegations of a Tk2 crore transaction following the murder, Harunor Rashid said: "We have heard these claims and are investigating all aspects. The mastermind behind the murder, Aktaruzzaman Shaheen, moved from Bangladesh to Delhi, then Kathmandu, Dubai, and eventually the United States. While we have not arrested him yet, we have identified and arrested many other accused. Jihad has been arrested in India, and Siam, who was arrested in Kathmandu, has been handed over to India. If necessary, we will go to interrogate Siam following directives from higher authorities."
He also mentioned that two vehicles used by the mastermind, Aktaruzzaman Shaheen, have been seized.

MP Anar murder: Bail plea of Silisti Rahman rejectedAnwarul Azim Anar, a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League, crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas said that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if necessary.
Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the Bangladesh government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.
