A Dhaka court on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Siam Hossain, a key suspect in the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, killed in India last month.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque passed the order after Mahfuzur Rahman, assistant commissioner of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and also the investigating officer of the case, submitted an application in this regard the day prior.

Nepal police recently arrested Siam Hossain, one of the key suspects in the murder of the MP, who had fled to Kathmandu following the killing.

Before this, Bangladesh police confirmed Siam’s whereabouts and requested Nepal’s National Central Bureau to apprehend him.

Sources familiar with the matter say Kathmandu police are willing to hand over Siam to Bangladesh police – a team led by DB chief Harunor Rashid is already in Nepal – but due to the absence of an extradition treaty between the two countries, his repatriation has become complicated.

The investigating officer in his application said it would be easier to bring Siam back to Bangladesh if an arrest warrant is issued for him, according to media reports.

Anwarul Azim Anar, a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League, crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas said that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if necessary.

Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.
