Anar murder case: SC stays bail of accused Shimul Bhuiyan

The Appellate Division's Chamber Court has stayed the High Court order granting bail to Shimul Bhuiyan, an accused in the case over the abduction and murder of former Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar in India.

The order was passed on Sunday by the Chamber Court headed by Justice Md Rezaul Haque.

Earlier, on June 8, a High Court bench granted Shimul interim bail and issued a rule in the matter.

Anwarul Azim Anar was murdered and dismembered in a flat in Kolkata's New Town area on May 13, 2024.

On May 22 of the same year, Anar's daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka.

According to case documents, Amanullah Sayeed alias Shimul Bhuiyan, also known as Shihab and Fazal Mohammad Bhuiyan, gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on June 5, 2024. He was later sent to jail.

Following the killing, then home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said at a press briefing that three people had been arrested in Bangladesh based on information provided by Indian authorities.

The three accused were identified as Amanullah Sayeed alias Shimul Bhuiyan, Tanvir Bhuiyan and Celeste Rahman.

They were arrested in connection with the murder case filed by Anar's daughter and were produced before a court on May 24, 2024.
