A case filed against four people, including physician Nafisa Tabassum Dhipra’s husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law, over her death was withdrawn on Wednesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana ordered the withdrawal following an application by the plaintiff, Mashiur Rahman Shah.
Abu Shahin, bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the matter.
On June 16, Mashiur Rahman, identifying himself as a relative of Dhipra, filed the case with the same court, alleging death due to negligence, torture and concealment of evidence by burying her without an autopsy.
The accused were Dhipra’s husband, Dr Rahmat Rashid; her father-in-law, Dr Mohammad Abdur Rashid, head of the Cardiac Department at BIRDEM Hospital; her mother-in-law, Siddika Sultana; and Shimu Naser, editor of satire website Earki, along with several unidentified people.
The court had directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the allegations.
However, Mashiur Rahman applied to withdraw the case on July 29. In the application, he said he had filed the case as part of his social responsibility after learning about Dhipra’s death through social media.
The application stated that Dhipra’s father, Alauddin, had applied to the court on July 16, objecting to the exhumation of her body.
After the court rejected the application, Dhipra’s father met the plaintiff and informed him of the main facts of the incident.
The plaintiff subsequently learned about factual errors in the case, according to the application.
Mashiur Rahman further stated that he later learned from various sources that Dhipra had died after suffering cardiac arrest.
After learning that the case contained factual errors, he applied for its withdrawal.
