Police have withdrawn three personnel from duty following a clash at the Brahmanbaria Police Lines during a cultural program late Tuesday night, with a three-member committee formed to investigate the incident.
The three personnel have been attached to the police lines following alleged lapses at the main gate and in compound duty during the initial stage of the incident, according to a statement issued by the district police on Wednesday.
The committee, headed by the additional superintendent of police (administration and finance), has been asked to submit its report as soon as possible.
The incident occurred around 11pm inside the police lines in West Medda of Brahmanbaria municipality. At least 20 madrasa students were injured when police used batons to bring the situation under control. Several police personnel were also injured.
Tensions continued in the area until early Wednesday.
Later that night, police representatives and madrasa students held a meeting to discuss the incident. A video of the meeting has since surfaced, showing both sides presenting their accounts of what happened.
In its statement issued around 4:45pm Wednesday, the district police said the incident was being treated with the “utmost importance”.
The police said the investigation committee would examine the actual cause of the incident and the overall circumstances before recommending further action.
The three personnel were withdrawn over alleged lapses in gate security and compound duty during the initial stage of the incident, the statement said.
However, the police did not disclose their names or ranks.
Police also urged all concerned not to spread speculative or misleading information about the incident while the investigation is underway.
