The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) chief Additional Commissioner Harunor Rashid on Saturday said that the detained Awami League leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed in connection with the murder of MP Anwarul Azim Anar, is being interrogated on various issues.

Many important things are being asked. However, he has not yet been officially arrested. If any involvement is found in the interrogation, he will be shown arrested.

He said these things in response to a question from reporters at his office on Minto Road on Saturday.

Regarding the DNA test of the flesh recovered from a septic tank at Sanjeeva Garden of Kolkata, Harun said that MP's family members will go to India very soon for the DNA test.

“We talked to them. Apart from this, the Indian investigation officers have also taken the names and mobile numbers of the family members. They will call soon,” said the DB chief.

When asked about the bringing back of Aktaruzzaman Shaheen, he said that Shaheen had gone to America from Nepal via Dubai. “When I was in India, I talked with the police there, and had a meeting. Since he was killed in India, Shaheen is most wanted by India. We are also working, they are also working. We have submitted the documents to the NCB at the police headquarters. They may have reported these things to Interpol. We are talking with the embassy of Bangladesh. But I can say this, those who are involved in Anar’s murder will be brought under the law.”

Harun also said Siam was taken by India from Nepal. Siam and Jihad know details about the gruesome murder. Both of them are now with the Indian police. Conducting operations with them will yield good results.

He said, criminals hide in Kathmandu, take hostages, and extort money. There has become a crime route. “We have met with several police officers of Nepal. I went to different hotels with them. I have brought all the information. We think this is our achievement because we have given information. India is also working. The investigation officers of the two countries are working through mutual cooperation, yielding good results. The three people, arrested in Bangladesh, have also confessed.”

In reply to the question of whether the accused arrested in Bangladesh would be taken to India, Harun said it has to be discussed through the appropriate authorities.

“When we went to India earlier, we took permission from the authorities,” he added.

Anwarul Azim Anar, a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League, crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswas’s home in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas said that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call if necessary.

Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the Bangladesh government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.
