Hailing from Tangail’s Mirzapur Upazila, 25-year-old Mehedi Hasan had long dreamt of a better future abroad.

Even on Thursday morning, he called his father, Aynal Miah, back at their village home in the upazila’s Banail Union.

But the deadly fire at the Kacchi Bhai restaurant shattered his dreams when he and 44 others, including children and women, were killed several hours later. His family claimed that he used to work there.

On Friday morning, the manager of the restaurant, identifying himself as Jisan, said 25 staffers were on duty when the fire broke out. Among them, two employees -- Jihad Hossain, 22, and Rocky, 20 -- were killed.

However, he did not mention a third fatality.

Meanwhile, after Mehedi’s body was brought to his village home on Friday afternoon, villagers and relatives flocked there in large numbers.

His mother and sister kept fainting repeatedly. His father and brother were seen wailing.

Mehedi’s younger brother, Israfil said: “We were working in the eatery when the blaze sparked.”

Sumaiya Akter, their sister, said Mehedi was supposed to visit them on Friday.

“My brother failed to keep his promise. He came home finally, but not alive,” said a shell-shocked Sumaiya.

Aynal said: “I’m undone now. I lost my son. There is nothing left now.”

The local administration said it would financially assist Mehedi’s family.

Mehedi was laid to rest after his namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayers) in his village on Friday afternoon.
