Jatiya Party leader Mashiur Rahman Ranga has apologized to the family of Shahid Noor Hossain, who was killed during a protest rally during the regime of military dictator HM Ershad.
Ranga also withdrew his remark through a press statement issued on Tuesday, saying it had hurt the sentiments of Noor family.
The release said: “Every year during Noor's death anniversary, some organizations make crude remarks about HM Ershad, even use vulgar language while talking about him. For this reason, some Jatiya Party activists have been resentful for a long time.”
In the statement, he stated: "In that context, I have involuntary made some comments about Noor, which I regret now and apologize for it.
"I sincerely apologize to Noor's mother, who was hurt by the comment that I inadvertently said. Therefore, I withdraw my statement that has produced adverse reactions among people."
He hopes that there will be no further misunderstanding over the matter, the release said.
On Monday, a legal notice was sent to Jatiya Party leader Mashiur Rahman Ranga for his comment on Noor Hossain by Supreme Court lawyer ZI Khan Panna.
Noor was killed in police firing at Dhaka's Zero Point during a protest procession against the regime of the then military dictator HM Ershad, the founder of the Jatiya Party (JaPa), on November 10, 1987.
On Sunday, Ranga claimed that Shaheed Noor Hossain was addicted to drugs like yaba and phensedyl at a discussion organized by his party marking "Democracy Day."
Ranga's controversial comments over Shaheed Noor triggered mass criticism in the political arena of the country and social media platforms including Facebook.
Later on Monday, Noor’s mother Morium Bibi said she will take legal action against Ranga for his ill remarks about her son.
