Sunil Shuvo Roy appointed co-chairman, spokesperson of JaPa faction

JaPa also calls for urgent measures to resolve the ongoing gas and power crisis

Update : 23 Aug 2026, 09:47 PM

Sunil Shuvo Roy has been appointed co-chairman of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) faction led by Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud.

He has also been given the responsibility of serving as the party’s spokesperson.

According to a press release issued by the party, the decision was taken at an emergency meeting held at the JaPa chairman’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Sunday. Party Chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud and Secretary General ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader assigned Roy the new responsibilities.

Roy previously served as press secretary to JaPa founder and former chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad. He also served as a member of the party’s presidium.

Following Ershad’s death, Roy remained with the faction led by Raushan Ershad. On Sunday, he rejoined the faction led by Anisul Islam Mahmud.

The meeting also discussed the ongoing gas and power crisis in the country.

JaPa Secretary General ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader said the gas crisis was disrupting production at various industrial units, forcing some factories to shut down and leaving workers unemployed.

“The gas and power crisis is not only hurting the industrial sector, but also affecting employment, production, trade and the livelihoods of ordinary people,” he said.

“Many industrial units are unable to maintain normal production due to the gas shortage. Production has declined in some factories, while others are being forced to shut down. When factories close, workers suffer the most as they lose their jobs, affecting their families as well.”

Calling for urgent action, Howlader said the crisis should not be underestimated.

“Factory closures do not mean losses for individual businesses alone. The livelihoods of thousands of workers, the future of their families and the country’s economy are all at stake. The government must give the issue immediate attention and take effective measures to resolve the gas and power crisis,” he said.

Senior JaPa Co-Chairman Kazi Firoz Rashid, Executive Chairman Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Presidium Members Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan and Sardar Md Shahjahan, along with other central leaders, also spoke at the meeting.
