At least 30 leaders and activists sustained injuries in a turf war between conflicting factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League at Chittagong University.
In an attempt to establish supremacy and following previous enmity, three factions armed with machetes and iron rods engaged in several clashes from Wednesday afternoon till Thursday morning.
Of the warring factions, Sixty Nine and Concord are known to be followers of Chittagong city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, while the other faction, Bijoy, is reported to owe its allegiance to deputy minister for education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury.
According to witnesses, followers of the city mayor entered Suhrawardy Hall and F Rahman Hall and launched an attack on their rival group, Bijoy.
At least 25 rooms of F Rahman Hall in the university were vandalized during the clash and at least five crude bombs were blasted.
On information, the proctorial body and the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police detained around 50 people from the spot who were later let go, said campus sources.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, CU Proctor SM Monirul Hasan said they would hold a meeting with the warring factions.
Masud Alam, Hathazari police station OC, said they have detained eight students on charges of being involved with the clash.
“Police personnel have been deployed to avert further clashes on campus,” the OC said.
