Bangladesh recorded 82 deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours – the highest single-day death toll reported in the country in 52 days.
It was April 29 last when the country had recorded more Covid-19 casualties – 88 deaths.
With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 13,548 in the country.
With 3,641 people testing positive over the same period, the number of total infections rose to 851,668.

On the other hand, another 2,509 patients recovered from the infectious disease over the same period.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Sunday afternoon.
As many as 22,231 samples, including some pending ones, were tested at 528 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and the new patients were confirmed, with an infection rate of 16.38% during the same period.
To date, 6,327,734 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall test positivity rate of 13.46%.
Of the 82 deceased – 55 men and 27 women – 32 were from Khulna division, 19 from Dhaka, 12 from Rajshahi, nine from Chittagong, four from Mymensingh, two from Sylhet, and one each from Barisal and Rangpur divisions.

Of them, 71 patients died in government hospitals, eight in private hospitals, and three at home.
Thirty-eight of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 21 aged between 51 and 60, 11 aged between 41 and 50, nine aged between 31 and 40, two in 21-30 age group, and one in 11-30 age group.
So far, 9,712 men (71.69%) and 3,836 women (28.31%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 7,378 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,592 in Chittagong, 869 in Rajshahi, 987 in Khulna, 404 in Barisal, 501 in Sylhet, 532 in Rangpur, and 285 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.59%.
Up to this point, 782,655 patients — 91.9% of all infected — have recovered from Covid-19 across the country.
Currently, 31,226 people are in isolation and 51,339 are quarantined.
Lockdown in Kushtia
The district administration of Kushtia on Sunday evening imposed a weeklong lockdown to halt the transmission of Covid-19.
Issuing a public circular, it said all shops, malls, tea stalls, restaurants, other businesses and factories would remain closed during the lockdown starting Monday.
However, kitchen markets and stores selling daily essentials will be allowed to operate from 7am till 12 noon by ensuring health norms during the lockdown.
Tourist spots, resorts, community and recreational centres will be shut then. No public transports will be allowed on the streets as well.
The authorities have warned of stricter actions for violating the provisions.
On March 8 last year, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,877,114 lives and infected 179,032,373 people across the world till Sunday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
