Measles outbreak: Death toll 605 as four children die in 24 hours

DGHS reports rising infections and suspected cases as the nationwide outbreak continues to spread across multiple districts

Four children died from measles-related complications across the country in the 24 hours till 8am Thursday, raising the overall death toll from the ongoing outbreak to 605, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the latest fatalities, one was a confirmed measles patient while three were classified as suspected measles cases, the DGHS said in its daily health bulletin.

The deaths were reported from Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Sunamganj and Rangpur, with Dhaka recording one confirmed measles death and the others involving suspected cases.

Since March 15, a total of 91 confirmed measles patients and 514 suspected measles patients have died, bringing the combined death toll to 605.

The bulletin said 69 new measles cases were confirmed during the reporting period, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 9,260 since March 15.

In addition, 1,136 people were identified as suspected measles patients over the past 24 hours, raising the cumulative number of suspected cases to 75,708.

Since the outbreak began, 61,194 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 57,043 have been discharged after receiving treatment, according to the DGHS.

The data was compiled by the Health Emergency Operations Center and Control Room of the DGHS.
