Bangladesh records highest ever 7-day moving average of Covid-19 deaths

Daily infections reach new high for the third straight day

Bangladesh has recorded the highest ever seven-day moving average of daily deaths  from the novel coronavirus – 46.43 – since the pandemic broke out in March last year.

According to the latest figures released by the authorities, the country reported 50 deaths in the 24 hours to Friday morning, taking the tally of fatalities to 9,155. 

The highest seven-day moving average of deaths during the pandemic was 44.86 on July 5 last year. 

Alarmingly, the seven-day moving average of deaths was below 10 on March 11 and continued to rise since then. For a seven-day moving average, one has to take the data of the last one week, add them up, and divide it by 7.

Meanwhile, for the third day straight, Bangladesh saw the highest number of people testing Covid-19 positive in a single day.

A total of 6,830 people tested positive in the 24-hour period. It was 6,469 on Thursday and 5,358 on Wednesday.

With the latest development, the total infections stood at 624,594 in the country while the total number of deaths reached 9,155 in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Friday.

Besides, Friday’s test positivity rate – 23.28% – is the highest recorded in the last seven months.

It was August 6 last when the country had recorded a higher infection rate – 23.43%.

The overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.21%.

Of the 50 deceased – 40 men and 10 women – 36 were from Dhaka division; seven from Chittagong; three from Khulna; and two each from Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.

Of the victims, 49 died at different hospitals and one at home.

So far, 6,887 men (75.23%) and 2,268 women (24.77%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 5,228 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,652 in Chittagong, 508 in Rajshahi, 589 in Khulna, 274 in Barisal, 327 in Sylhet, 376 in Rangpur, and 201 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.47%.

The health authorities said 2,473 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 547,411 patients – 87.64% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 29,339 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 226 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

Currently, 12,362 people are in isolation and 39,089 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 2,842,621 lives and infected 130,313,443 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 104,996,315 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
