A Dhaka court on Friday sent Tahsin Islam, a suspected member of the extremist outfit Fatah Combat System (FCS), to jail after rejecting a police plea to place him on a seven-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir passed the order following a hearing on the remand petition.
During the hearing, Tahsin denied the allegations against him.
"I am completely innocent," he told the court when asked whether he had anything to say.
SI Masum Khan of the prosecution division said the court also directed investigators to submit a progress report on the case within the next three days.
Police produced Tahsin before the court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure after arresting him from his home in the Kismat Noapara area of Jessore Sadar upazila at around 9pm on Thursday.
Investigators sought a seven-day remand, arguing that further interrogation was necessary for the ongoing investigation. Jatrabari Police Station Inspector AB Siddique argued in favor of the remand, while Tahsin appeared before the court without legal representation.
According to police, Tahsin admitted during preliminary questioning to being an active member of the Fatah Combat System (FCS).
The arrest was made in connection with a case filed by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Police said they also recovered a machete, electrical wires and several electronic devices from Tahsin's room during the raid.
The arrest follows a crackdown on the alleged extremist outfit.
Earlier, at around 6:30am on Sunday, police arrested six other suspected FCS members—Shah Amanat Sabir, Hossain Tanim, Junaid, Ataullah Shah, Abidur Rahman and Bayojit—from the Mini Cox's Bazar area of Jatrabari in Dhaka.
Police initially sought seven-day remands for all six suspects under Section 54, but the court granted three-day remands.
After the remand expired on Wednesday, investigators sought another seven-day remand for Sabir and Tanim, while requesting that the remaining four suspects be sent to jail.
The court granted Sabir and Tanim an additional three days in remand and ordered the other four suspects to be sent to jail pending further proceedings.
