A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Nibas Majumdar, a central assistant secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and former vice-president of its Dhaka South unit, on a five-day police remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manjurul Islam passed the order after hearing a police petition seeking a 10-day remand.
Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
Earlier, on July 28, the investigation officer and Inspector Md Masudur Rahman of the Tejgaon Detective Branch produced Nibas before the court and sought a 10-day remand. The court had sent him to jail and fixed Sunday for the hearing.
According to the remand petition, preliminary interrogation revealed evidence of the accused's alleged involvement in the incident. Investigators also alleged that he played a role in organising leaders and activists of the banned organisation through various online platforms, including a Telegram group named "Sheikh Hasina Soinik Central," as part of a conspiracy to destabilise the country.
Police argued that further interrogation was necessary to identify and arrest other absconding suspects, trace the source of the cocktails allegedly used in the explosions, and advance the investigation.
During the hearing, defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand plea, while the prosecution opposed the request. After hearing both sides, the court granted a five-day remand.
According to the case statement, on the morning of June 18, Nibas and 35 to 40 leaders and activists of the Awami League and Chhatra League allegedly brought out an unlawful procession near Mohakhali Bus Terminal on Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Sarani under Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
The prosecution alleged that the participants chanted anti-government slogans, engaged in anti-state activities, detonated cocktails and created panic among the public. Police subsequently filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
