A Dhaka court on Sunday sent Saifullah alias Mohabbat, husband of actor Asma Akter Zhilik—who died after falling from the eighth floor of a hospital in Dhanmondi—to jail.
Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Kazi Abdul Mannan of Dhanmondi Model Police Station produced the accused before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam and sought his detention in jail in a case filed over abetment to suicide.
Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
There was no bail petition for the accused, he said.
Zhilik died on Friday afternoon after falling from the eighth-floor balcony of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital in Dhanmondi.
Her brother, Mozammel Haque, filed the case with Dhanmondi Model Police Station on Saturday, and police arrested Saifullah in the case. The court later granted him a one-day remand for questioning.
After the remand, the jail custody petition stated that the accused had provided several important pieces of information during interrogation that indicated his involvement in the incident. It added that the information would help the investigation and that he needed to remain in jail until the probe was completed.
According to the case statement, Saifullah developed severe abdominal pain, and Zhilik and her brother Mozammel took him to the emergency department of the Government Employees Hospital in Fulbaria, Gulistan, around 5:30am on June 10.
He was advised to undergo tests and was later taken to Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi around 6:30am. After examining his condition and test reports, the duty doctor advised that he be admitted for treatment.
As there was no vacant seat or cabin available, he was admitted to cabin No. 813 on the 8th floor of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital in Dhanmondi. Zhilik stayed at the hospital to take care of him.
On Friday morning, his sister, brother-in-law, and son from his first marriage came to the hospital to see Saifullah. As he had recovered, he was discharged around 10am.
Zhilik informed her brother Mozammel about it and asked him to send Tk16,000 for the hospital bill.
At around 1:15pm, Zhilik spoke to her younger sister, Reshmi Akter, over a video call. About an hour later, Saifullah called Zhilik’s father and said that Zhilik had fallen through an open window behind the cabin and died.
Asma Akter Zhilik acted in several films and television productions.
She also played a supporting role in Rangbaz, a film starring Shakib Khan.
