Six points of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Moulvibazar were flowing above the danger level on Monday night, leading to widespread flooding.
Sarder Udoy Raihan, executive engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), told Dhaka Tribune: “The upstream areas of the rivers in Sylhet division are experiencing heavy rainfall over the next 24–48 hours. The water level may rise in the lower-lying areas of the division.”
Raihan remarked that the districts of Sunamganj, Habiganj, and Netrokona are at risk of flooding due to rising water levels.
Moulvibazar
Five upazilas of Moulvibazar district are now flooded, leaving more than 11,000 people stranded.
Moulvibazar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Israil Hossain told Dhaka Tribune: “We have prepared 26 flood shelters. However, only 85 families have taken refuge in them.”
He confirmed that three points of the Manu River in Rajnagar upazila are set to be reinforced with geobags.
Rajnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afroza Habiba Shapla said: “Three villages are flooded. We distributed 400 packets of dry rations today.”
Around 670 families are stranded in the upazila, she added.
Sylhet
Currently, four families have taken refuge in a flood shelter in Osmani Nagar upazila of the district. UNO Joynal Abedin told Dhaka Tribune: “If the water level rises slightly, it will reach the upazila roads.”
Ratan Kumer Adhikari, UNO of Gowainghat, said: “The water level has been
decreasing since morning. Still, we are prepared with our 58 flood shelters and volunteer team.”
Kanaighat UNO Tania Aktar said: “The water level has not yet reached the houses.”
“We have prepared 36 flood shelters, but no one has taken refuge in them yet. In our upazila, residents often go to their relatives in higher areas,” she added.
Biyanibazar UNO Golam Mustafa Munna confirmed that the upazila is not flooded. However, there is some stagnant water.
He noted that the water level is decreasing.
Habiganj
A village in Nabiganj upazila of the district has been flooded. DC Dr Md Faridur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune: “Around 20 families have taken refuge in a flood shelter in the village.”
Chittagong
The flow of the Halda River is currently at a normal level. According to Fatikchhari UNO Mozammel Haque Chowdhury: “The water level has been decreasing since morning. Conditions are normal now.”
