Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and Md Nahid Islam have made history by taking their oaths as advisors of Bangladesh’s newly formed interim government. This landmark appointment marks the first time students have assumed such pivotal roles in national governance since Bangladesh’s independence.

Their inclusion in the interim administration signifies a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, highlighting a new era of youth involvement and leadership in shaping the nation's future.

Nahid will oversee the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry, while Asif will lead the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Their appointment to such high-level positions comes as the country navigates a pivotal transitional phase.

After taking the oath of office on Thursday night, Nahid told Dhaka Tribune that the student-led movement's primary goal was to reshape Bangladesh’s political landscape.

“Our goal is to create a new Bangladesh,” Nahid said. “The primary objective is to ensure fair and democratic elections. However, before we reach that stage, it is crucial to reform other state structures.”

He emphasized the movement’s dual focus on electoral integrity and systemic reform, reflecting a comprehensive approach to achieving a more equitable and transparent governance framework.

Meanwhile, Asif said he had sought to establish a government that was acceptable to all.

"Over the past three days, through extensive dialogue with students, civil society and political organizations, we have successfully created a government that reflects the collective consent and efforts of all involved."

Their rise as leaders

The student movement, which gained momentum after a High Court verdict in June, initially began as a protest against government job quotas.

Many of the leaders were from the newly formed Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti, led by Akhtar Hossain.

Akhtar, previously the social services secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), founded the organization on October 4, 2023, alongside key figures including Nahid and Asif.

Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti emerged from the remnants of Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad, which had spearheaded protests against job quotas in 2018.

The new organization was established in response to what its leaders saw as ongoing discrepancies and injustices within the quota system.

Nahid and Asif, both prominent leaders within the group, were integral to the formation of the interim government.

According to the latest committee announcement, of the 23 protest coordinators, nine are high-ranking members of Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti, reflecting the organization’s influential role in shaping the movement’s trajectory.

On July 8, the movement expanded its leadership team, comprising 65 members including 23 coordinators and 42 co-coordinators. The new committee included influential Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti figures such as Nahid, Asadullah Al Ghalib, Nusrat Tabassum and DU Committee Convener Asif.

The protests originally sparked by demands for reform in Bangladesh’s quota policy for the families of freedom fighters escalated into a full-scale anti-government movement, culminating in Hasina’s resignation.
