A BNP member was shot and a passerby injured after miscreants opened fire in front of Millat Camp in Mirpur-11 in the capital on Friday afternoon.
The shooting took place at around 5:30pm.
The injured man was identified as Md Alamgir, 55, a fish trader and BNP member from Nawabganj upazila in Dhaka district. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
A passerby, identified as Rajiya, was also hit by gunfire and taken to a local hospital.
Pallabi police station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Bashir said the attackers fired three rounds, injuring Alamgir and the woman.
“Efforts are underway to investigate the incident and arrest those involved,” he said.
According to Alamgir’s family members, he may have been targeted over a political dispute.
His uncle, Md Ashik, said the attackers opened fire on Alamgir in front of a tea stall on Road No. 2 in Block B of Mirpur-11 before fleeing the scene.
Ashik alleged that four people, including Rubel and Bappa, who are involved in local Jubo League politics, arrived in a private car and shot Alamgir.
Alamgir sustained bullet injuries to the right side of his head, abdomen and right thigh, according to his family.
Family members initially took him to a local Islami Hospital before transferring him to DMCH at around 6:30pm for advanced treatment. He is currently receiving treatment in the hospital’s emergency department.
Alamgir is the son of Abdur Razzak and a resident of Road No. 3 in Mirpur-11.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, said a man with bullet injuries from the Mirpur area had been admitted to the hospital.
“The patient’s condition is critical, and the matter has been reported to the relevant police station,” he said.
