The overall flood situation has improved in various districts of the country in the 24 hours till 7pm on Thursday.
Despite heavy rainfall, the low-lying areas of Kurigram, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Bogra, Tangail and Sirajganj districts adjacent to the Brahmaputra-Jamuna remained unchanged.
The evening bulletin of the Flood Forecasting Warning Centre (FFWC) said the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region may rise at a particular time in the next 24 hours.
As a result, the Teesta and Dharla rivers may flow above the danger level at some stations for a short duration.
However, the Jamuneswari, Upper Karatoa, Upper Atrai, Punarava, Tangon and Ichamoti-Jamuna rivers in the northern region of the country may rise rapidly at the same time.
The Atrai River at Baghabari point may witness a fall; thus, the flood situation of low-lying areas of Sirajganj district along the river may improve in the next 24 hours.
The flood situation in different low-lying areas of the northeastern region of the country may remain in a steady state, the bulletin added. Besides, the Brahmaputra River is on a rising trend, while the Jamuna River remains steady. Both rivers may remain steady in the next 24 hours.
The Ganges River is in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 72 hours, while the Padma River is in a steady state, which may continue in the next 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall is expected in the next 24 hours in the northern and northeastern regions and adjoining upstream parts of the country.
In Jamalpur, the overall flood situation has improved as water from different rivers has started to recede.
Meanwhile, local residents in Sylhet are in fear of fresh flooding in the district following three hours of rain on Thursday. Several areas went under water, including Upashahar, Kajalshah, Dargamahalla, Kalighat, Baghbari and Machimpur.
Local people said that water from upstream is also threatening to submerge new areas across Sylhet.
According to FFWC, the level of water in 61 stations rose and declined in 47 over the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, two students drowned in floodwaters in the Bainpara area of Sherpur on Thursday afternoon, Abdullah Al Mahmud Bhuiyan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sherpur Sadar, said.
On the other hand, a child and a woman have died in Ramuliar Chara area of Cox’s Bazar as a chunk of mud fell on them following heavy rainfall on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Md Hasan, 5, and Jamila Begum, 35.
