Environment Ministry urges caution and awareness about Russell's Viper

To ensure public safety and welfare, the ministry has issued numerous guidance

Update : 24 Jun 2024, 04:16 PM

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has addressed public concern regarding recent sightings of the Russell’s Viper in various parts of Bangladesh.

To ensure public safety and welfare, the ministry has issued numerous guidance.

While the presence of Russell's Viper is alarming, human encounters with these snakes are generally rare. Russell's Vipers typically inhabit lowland grasslands, thickets, open forests, and agricultural areas, often avoiding human settlements.

The snake's matte colour allows it to blend easily with the ground, making it difficult to spot. If people approach too closely without noticing the snake, it may attack out of fear. As good swimmers, Russell’s Vipers have spread to different parts of the country via river currents and floodwaters.

The ministry urges everyone to exercise caution and remain vigilant in areas where these snakes might be present.

How to avoid snake bites

The ministry advised extra caution when driving in areas where Russell's Vipers have been spotted. Additionally, they urged people to be careful when walking in tall grass, bushes, and agricultural areas. They recommended avoiding reaching into holes, wearing boots and long pants when working in affected areas, always using a flashlight at night, keeping the surroundings clean and free of garbage, and being cautious when removing fallen trees, firewood, or straw. If a snake is spotted, people should not try to catch or kill it but should call the National Helpline at 333 or inform the nearest Forest Department office.

What to do in case of snake bite

The bitten limb should not be moved. If bitten on the leg, the person must sit and avoid walking. If bitten on the hand, the hand should be kept still. Movement of the joints in the hands and feet can cause the venom to spread quickly through the bloodstream due to muscle contractions. The affected area should be gently washed with soap or wiped with a wet cloth. Remove any watches, jewellery, talismans, or turbans. Do not prick, needle, or apply any ointment or other substances to the bite. If bitten by a snake, do not waste time seeking treatment from a local quack healer (Ojha) and go to the nearest hospital or healthcare centre immediately. Don't panic, as Russell's Viper antivenom is available free of cost at government hospitals.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen said that the country has sufficient antivenom supplies and hospitals have been instructed to stock them.

To reduce outbreaks of Russell's Vipers

Certain animals, such as mongooses, monitor lizards, large Indian civets, Asian palm civets, jungle cats, fishing cats, crested serpent eagles, cranes, lesser adjutants, and some snake species, prey on Russell's Vipers, helping control their population. However, the indiscriminate killing of these wildlife by humans is leading to an increase in the viper's numbers. Therefore, it's important to avoid killing wild animals and destroying their habitats without reason.

It's worth noting that Russell's Viper is a protected species under Section 6(1) of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act 2012. By consuming rodents, Russell's Viper helps protect crops and plays a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance and preserving biodiversity. Additionally, the venom of these snakes is used to produce many life-saving medicines. Killing snakes is a punishable offence, so it is essential to avoid harming them.

Under the guidance of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury, the Forest Department is implementing various measures to address the situation. Local authorities and conscious societies are urged to conduct awareness programs in their communities. The situation is being actively monitored, and updates will be provided as needed.
