Left-handed opener Soumya Sarkar intends to work on converting his innings with the 2019 World Cup knocking on the door.

A few of the Bangladesh cricketers are in break, while many have joined their respective Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League teams since their return from New Zealand earlier this month.

Soumya featured in three matches for Abahani Limited in the 50-over tournament and has scored 33, 26 and 43 runs respectively.

Like Soumya, many national cricketers who are likely to make the squad for the World Cup have chosen the Dhaka League as their platform to prepare for the world event.

“It is good for us that we got the Dhaka League ahead of the World Cup. I am personally working on ways to play big innings in the matches. It doesn’t matter how many deliveries I am facing. At the same time, I also need to make sure that I am responding according to the game situation,” said Soumya to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.

“Preparation differs from person to person. For me, match preparation is very important when I am batting in the top-order. At the same time, I need to be actively planning when I am in the middle-order so that I can hold on to my wicket after scoring 30 to 40 runs. The amount of time I am getting to learn from being in the middle is also important. In the last three innings (in Dhaka League) I might have scored 30s and 40s but I am happy because I feel my process while batting in the middle was right and got dismissed by good balls,” the Bangladesh batsman added.

Backed by his domestic form, Soumya had managed to make it to the national squad just months ahead of the 2015 World Cup.

The 26-year old informed that responsibility on him has increased as he has spent quite a few years in the national team.

Therefore this time, there will be expectation on him to play well in the World Cup, scheduled to begin in May this year in England.

In the last World Cup, Soumya played six matches for Bangladesh and scored 175 runs at an average of 29.16 with a highest score of 51.

“I was absolutely new to the fold during the last World Cup. So for obvious reasons, I will have a different set of plans and a role to play in this World Cup. I had played with a free mind in 2015 but this time there will surely be some pressure and expectation. I simply plan to use my years of international experience in the World Cup and hold on the courage that I had during the last World Cup and the Champions Trophy,” said Soumya.
