A man was killed and more than 50 others were injured in a clash between two groups over a pond land dispute in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Naji Molla, son of Abdul Awal Mia.
The clash broke out on the Nasirnagar-Sarail-Lakhai regional highway near a market in Burishwar union in the afternoon, leaving the area tense.
According to police and local residents, Abdul Awal Mia and Fazu Mia’s groups in Burishwar village had a long-standing dispute over pond land for a long time. The dispute escalated into a clash between their supporters on Friday afternoon.
At one point, Naji Molla of Abdul Awal Mia’s group was struck by a spear and died at the scene.
The injured were taken to Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Four people, including Abdul Awal Mia, were in critical condition and referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. The others are Rahich Mia, Taus Mia and Kalon Mia.
After news of Naji’s death spread, members of Fazu Mia’s group fled their homes, making it impossible to immediately determine the names of those injured or involved in the clash from their side.
Tension remained high in the area following the incident. A large number of police personnel were deployed to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.
Brahmanbaria ASP Obaidur Rahman said a large number of police personnel had been deployed in the area to prevent any further clashes.
