A second round of clashes erupted Friday evening between police and Inqilab Mancha activists in Shahbagh, Dhaka, leaving around 40 to 50 people injured, including Dhaka-18 independent candidate Mohiuddin Roni.
Police used baton charges, tear shells, and sound grenades to disperse protesters.
The confrontation began around 7:50pm when police tried to remove activists from Shahbagh intersection. Tensions had been high since the afternoon as protesters demanded justice for the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi and a UN-led investigation.
After earlier clashes, activists returned to the intersection, and when police asked them to vacate the road, the situation escalated. Protesters reportedly threw bricks and stones in response.
Police confirmed that about 40 activists were brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Following Friday prayers, activists had marched from Shahbagh toward the chief adviser’s residence at Jamuna, breaking through police barricades at the InterContinental intersection before being dispersed.
As of the latest updates, the Shahbagh area remained tense.
