At least 30 people, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Moglabazar Police Station and seven other police officers, were injured in a clash between two factions over the control of a shrine and mosque donation box in Sylhet on Friday noon.
The clash erupted around 1 p.m. in the Silam Choker Bazar area near the Hazrat Shah Tayyab Sailani (R.) Jame Mosque and Eidgah.
The long-standing dispute over the management of the Hazrat Shah Tayyab Sailani (R.) Waqf estate, its 40 shops, and committee formation escalated into a two-hour battle involving bricks and local weapons, temporarily halting traffic on the Chandipul-Balaganj road.
Responding police officers, including Moglabazar OC Md. Monir Hossain, were attacked during the chaos. Around 25 injured individuals, including mosque Mutawalli Fazlu Mia, Shueb Ahmad, and Ariful Haque Roni, were hospitalized at South Surma Upazila Health Complex and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Manzurul Alam, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), said a dispute-resolution meeting with local elders is scheduled for Saturday night to restore order, while extra police remain deployed to maintain peace.
