Tensions flared in Rangamati on Monday following the announcement of a newly formed district committee of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), leading to violent clashes between rival factions and prompting the local administration to impose Section 144.

The order, signed in the afternoon by Additional District Magistrate Nishat Sharmin, restricts public gatherings in key areas of the town to prevent further escalation.

According to local sources, unrest began shortly after the new committee was announced, as a group of excluded and dissatisfied leaders and activists expressed anger over not being included. The dispute quickly spilled onto the streets.

In the morning, opposing activists reportedly took positions in the Banarupa and Kathaltali areas, some carrying sticks and locally made weapons. The situation intensified when supporters of the newly formed committee brought out a victory procession from the Rangamati Municipality premises toward the party office, where the opposing faction had already staged a sit-in.

Clashes erupted between the two groups, resulting in several rounds of chases, counter-chases, and stone-throwing. At least 10 people were injured in the violence.

Security forces, including police and military personnel, were deployed to bring the situation under control. Authorities later restricted public assembly in the Municipality, Banarupa, and Kathaltali areas until further notice.

JCD leader Oli Ahad said that after an eight-year gap in forming the committee, it was not possible to accommodate everyone in a partial structure. He added that excluded members would be considered in future organizational decisions and claimed the unit remained united despite internal disagreements.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Iqbal Hossain said the situation is currently under control, but Section 144 remains in force to ensure public safety and prevent further clashes.
