Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Faruk Ahmed has said 90 BNP and its affiliate leaders and activists have been detained so far from the party's sit-ins at different entry points of Dhaka and that they will face legal action.
"Arrests continue… Those who took part in attacks [on police] will be brought to book. The filing of cases is underway,” he said on Saturday.
"The BNP and its associated parties gathered illegally at the entrances of Dhaka. They had not received permission from the DMP commissioner to hold this program… They had not even applied for permission."
BNP leaders and activists had been gathering illegally at different points since the morning and tried to create a public nuisance, he said, adding: "They attacked police—around 20 policemen, including Joint Commissioner (traffic south) Mehedi Hasan, were injured in the clashes."
"They also vandalized police vehicles. Additionally, they vandalized and set fire to around 20 vehicles belonging to the general public," the deputy commissioner said.
"Police tried to remove them from the road by using force," he added.
He further explained: "They attacked police again. Later, we fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the protesters."
