The Awami League-led 14-party alliance will occupy Dhaka on Saturday, to counter a rally of BNP in the city scheduled for the same day.
Health Minister and coalition spokesperson Mohammed Nasim made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon, hours after BNP moved their planned rally at Suhrawardy Udyan from Thursday to Saturday.
The 14-party alliance that day will organize their rally at Mahanagar Natya Mancha in Gulistan.
During a rally preparation meeting at Awami League’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue, Nasim said they would thwart all efforts of the conspirators to create disorder in the city.
"Dhaka has always been under our protection, and it will always be. Not just Dhaka, all of Bangladesh will be under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's protection,” he added.
The senior Awami League leader also urged all leaders and activists of the 14-party alliance to remain vigilant and prevent BNP from carrying out any subversive activities on Saturday.
Regarding the upcoming 11th general election, Nasim told the meeting: "Our campaigning has already started. Our [Awami League’s] general secretary is leading the campaigns in various districts and upazilas.
"Members of the 14-party alliance have also started campaigning in different areas. We want this election to be a competitive one.”
He urged coalition leaders and activists to make Saturday’s rally a successful one by attending it and spreading their word among the people of Dhaka.
