Tarique Rahman: Anti-discriminatory Bangladesh must be built

'We have made the fall of an autocratic government possible through a movement'

Update : 28 Sep 2024, 09:01 PM

BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman has said that an anti-discriminatory country must be built for the next generation.

Tarique said: “We have made the fall of an autocratic government possible through a movement. Now the nation's future must be built according to their expectation.”

Tarique Rahman was addressing a mass gathering of the party virtually on Saturday. The gathering was organized in the Payra Chattar area of Jhenaidah.

Speaking as the chief guest he said: “Naturally, this government has taken power through the support of the entire people. We had our support towards the government before and we have support towards it now. But there is a condition here. They have to do justice to the challenge of maintaining their trustworthiness. The interim government needs a road map to run the country properly and they must themselves make it clear.”

Expressing the BNP’s support for the interim government, Tarique said that one has to realize rationally that the government can't bring about all the changes by itself. Similarly, it must not take up any responsibility which it cannot bear, Tarique added.

Mentioning that the cohorts of the former prime minister are continuing with their plots, Tarqiue said: “We can see the friends of the former dictator still active in the administration. The current government is feeling helpless sometimes. If it does not end, then at one point we will see these small issues becoming big. And then a crisis moment will arise from which it will be difficult to escape.”

Saying that democracy will not be restored in the country without an elected government, Tarique went on to say that those who believe in democracy, the rights of the people, understand that only an elected government can attract foreign investment, international support, stability inside the country and in trade and commerce. For all these, there is no alternative to an elected government, he added.

He said: "The revolution of August has brought us the message of freedom and victory. The success of this movement in the fall of dictatorship was contributed by the people of all levels of the country; political parties, students, farmers, and workers. We have to bear these things in mind.”

He further said: "Let's pledge together. The people who sacrificed themselves in the last 17 years, especially in July and August, risked their lives in the fall of the dictatorship. Due to their sacrifice, the people of this country will regain their political rights. We must make a promise today. We will bring Bangladesh back to its normal path.”
