BNP Standing Committee Member and former state minister Selima Rahman has asked the interim government to give a roadmap for holding general elections after necessary reforms.
Mentioning that the election is a big step for democracy, the BNP leader said the people must choose their representatives through free and fair polls.
“We want the present government s carry out the necessary electoral reforms so that elections are held quickly,” she said at a rally organised to mark the International Day of Democracy in the city’s Planet World area on Tuesday.
Urging the leaders and activists of the party to play a role in establishing democracy in the country, the senior BNP leader said the party must now unite.
Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, there is now no place for anyone new in the party, she said.
“As elections are necessary to bring back democracy, this is our first message to this government that it should reform the state, administration, judiciary and ensure people’s right to vote,” she said.
Speaking as the chief guest at the rally, she also said that the BNP intends to reform the state and establish the real people's republic if it comes to power.
She mentioned that the party has been fighting for the protection of democracy, the right to speak, the right to vote, and the right to live freely for the last 17 years.
In continuation of that movement, the students have managed to save the country from the misrule of Sheikh Hasina, Selima Rahman added.
“We want to say that we are working for the people, working to protect the rights of people,” she further added.
Earlier, thousands of leaders of the party came to the venue from adjacent districts ahead of the rally. The venue area was full to the brim with BNP activists holding different placards and chanting various slogans.
