At least four people were killed in ‘police firing’ during a series of clashes that took place between the two groups of villagers over establishing supremacy at Sonakandi village in Narsingdi’s Raipura on Monday morning. Around 20 people were injured and 50 houses were set on fire during the clashes. Villagers alleged that many houses had been looted during the clashes. The deceased identified as Mamun Mia, 17, Khokon Mia, 20, Manik Miah, 25, and Shahjahan Miah, 30, son of Momin Uddin. Sources said the deceased were supporters of a local politico, former chairman of Nilokkhya Union Abdul Haque. Three police personnel – Officer-in-Charge of Raipur police station Azharul Islam, Sub-Inspector Asad Mia, and Constable Zilllur Rahman – are now undergoing treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Local sources said there had been a long-standing dispute between the two groups – one led by incumbent Awami League-backed chairman of the union Tajul Islam and former chairman Abdul Haque – over establishing supremacy in the area.Police personnel assist hospital staff bringing in an injured of the Narsingdi clash inside the Emergency Department of a local hospital Dhaka Tribune Police personnel assist hospital staff bringing in an injured of the Narsingdi clash inside the Emergency Department of a local hospital Dhaka TribuneAs a sequel to the dispute, supporters of both the groups locked into clash equipped with sticks and sharp weapons. The attackers were under the shelter of police during the clash.” He also said many people who had sustained injuries during the clash did not go to hospital fearing arrest.
