One killed in clash in Bagerhat

Officer-in-Charge of Chitalmari Police Station, Md Nazrul Islam, confirmed that one person had been killed and that incidents of arson and looting had taken place

A young man was killed in a series of clashes between two rival groups that broke out in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat reportedly over establishing supremacy in the area.

The incident took place in the Chingaria area, where the members of Biswas and Sheikh families were engaged in a prolonged clash lasting from around 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Rajib Sheikh, 28, son of Faruk Sheikh.

Witnesses said that during the clashes, assailants carried out widespread vandalism, looting, and arson, targeting 20 to 30 houses belonging to the Sheikh family. Valuables including gold ornaments, cash, and other belongings were looted before several houses were set on fire.

Sources said that a group from the Biswas family led the attack, causing extensive damage and losses to their properties.

Upon receiving information, members of the Bangladesh Army and police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Fire Service personnel later extinguished the blaze.
