A 22-year-old man accused of running an online shopping fraud targeting customers through Facebook has been arrested in Bagerhat in connection with a case filed in Narayanganj, police said.
The suspect, identified as Saurav Sheikh, was arrested from Kalia village in Bagerhat Sadar during a late-night raid on July 9 conducted by the Cyber Crime Unit of the Operations and Intelligence Wing of the 3rd Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Khulna. Additional DIG M.M. Salahuddin, commander of the unit, confirmed the arrest.
Police recovered three SIM cards, two mobile phones—a smartphone and a feature phone containing four additional SIMs—and Tk 3,900 in cash from the suspect. During initial interrogation, Saurav allegedly confessed that he had been involved in online fraud for nearly six months.
Investigators said he operated a Facebook page called "BD Enterprise", where he advertised shoes and other products, accepted customer orders, and collected payments without delivering the promised items. Instead, victims were allegedly tricked into making repeated mobile financial service transfers using false claims about courier fees, cash-out charges, server errors, and payment verification.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Shakil Ahmed, who ordered a pair of shoes through the Facebook page on April 22. After paying Tk 155 as an advance delivery charge, he received calls from individuals posing as courier service representatives.
They repeatedly persuaded him to send additional payments, claiming the parcel would otherwise be returned. Believing their assurances, Ahmed transferred money several times, ultimately losing Tk 18,323 before realizing he had been defrauded. The suspects then switched off their phones, prompting the victim to file a case under the Cyber Security Act.
