Tuku: Bangladesh meets entire Eid-ul-Azha sacrificial animal demand with local livestock

The state minister attributed the sector’s growing self-sufficiency to government policy support, the efforts of farmers, and continued investment by entrepreneurs

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku on Thursday said that Bangladesh successfully met its entire demand for sacrificial animals during this year’s Eid-ul-Azha through livestock raised by local farmers.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock conference room at the Secretariat, Tuku said a total of 93,67,418 animals were sacrificed nationwide during the festival.

The briefing was held to present preliminary nationwide statistics on sacrificial animals and outline government initiatives related to the Eid cattle market.

According to the state minister, the estimated demand for sacrificial animals this year stood at 1,1,06,334, while the available supply reached 1,23,33,840, leaving a surplus of 29,66,422 animals after Eid.

Data compiled by the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) from all eight divisions showed that the sacrificed animals included 48,64,158 cattle and buffaloes, 45,02,233 goats and sheep, and 1,027 animals of other species.

Division-wise, Dhaka recorded the highest number of sacrificial animals at 23,51,666, followed closely by Rajshahi with 23,42,869. Chittagong reported 17,34,025 animals, Rangpur 10,50,554, Khulna 8.46,005, Barisal 4,00,160, Mymensingh 3,67,818, and Sylhet 2,74,321.

Tuku said the number of animals sacrificed this year was 2,31,418 higher than in 2025.

He noted that last year’s projected demand was 1 crore, 3 lakh 79 thousand and 202 animals against an available supply of 1crore, 24 lakh,47 thousand and 337. A total of 91 lakh,36 thousand animals were sacrificed in 2025, leaving a surplus of 33 lakh, 11thousand and 337 animals.

The state minister attributed the sector’s growing self-sufficiency to government policy support, the efforts of farmers, and continued investment by entrepreneurs.

“Through coordinated efforts, the livestock sector has achieved self-reliance. The government is promoting modern technologies and farmer-friendly policies to strengthen the rural economy and ensure sustainable development,” he said.

The briefing was attended by Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md Delwar Hossain, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Md Shahzaman Khan, and other senior officials.
