Ducsu VP blames Chhatra Dal for Chittagong college clash; Shibir activist loses ankle

A case would be filed against those responsible, he says

Ducsu Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem has alleged that activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) were involved in a violent clash at Government City College in Chittagong, during which an Islami Chhatra Shibir activist suffered severe injuries, including the severing of his ankle.

He also announced that a case would be filed against those responsible.

Shadik Kayem made the remarks on Wednesday morning while visiting injured Shibir activist Ashraful Islam at a private hospital in the city’s Panchlaish area.

“It is quite clear that Chhatra Dal activists were involved in the attack. Those responsible are being identified, and a case will be filed based on information from the injured,” he told reporters.

He alleged that the attack inside the campus was premeditated and carried out using improvised weapons. “Ashraful Islam’s ankle was severed. He is being considered for transfer to Dhaka for advanced treatment,” he added.

The clash broke out on Tuesday over the word “Gupto” written on a graffiti wall at the college. According to reports, activists of Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir were involved in two rounds of clashes between 10am and 4pm. Both sides used sharp weapons and sticks, leaving at least 20 people injured, according to claims from both groups.

College sources said the wall originally carried the slogan “A campus free of student politics and Chhatra League.” On Monday, a group led by JCD joint convener Abdullah Al Mamun allegedly altered the graffiti by replacing the word “student” with “Gupto.”

Tensions escalated after the incident circulated on social media. Initial verbal altercations later turned into clashes as both sides took positions and exchanged slogans.

Shadik Kayem alleged that students and teachers were attacked at the outset, while a later protest came under renewed assault by armed outsiders. He also criticised what he called the “inactive role” of law enforcement agencies.

He claimed more than 30 Shibir activists were injured and said evidence had been handed over to police.

However, Chittagong city JCD convener Saiful Alam rejected the allegations, claiming Shibir activists initiated the violence.

Earlier, Shadik Kayem met Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali at the Laldighi police headquarters and submitted a memorandum demanding a fair investigation, arrest of those involved, punishment for perpetrators, inquiry into alleged police negligence, and enhanced campus security.
