Sylhet is set to launch the farmers’ market on Saturday, an initiative designed to allow farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers. The market has been set up near Tilagarh Point in the city.
Commerce, Industries, Textiles, and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir will formally inaugurate the market at 9:00 am. The initiative is a joint effort by the district administration and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam said that the market’s main goal is to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their products by eliminating intermediaries. Initially launched as a pilot project, the plan is to expand similar markets to other areas, including Tukerbazar, based on its success.
Sarwar Alam stated that the market will operate daily from morning until afternoon. Farmers can sell their produce directly, without paying any fees or tolls. An officer from the DAE will be present at all times to ensure smooth operation and security. The authorities also aim to provide consumers with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Md Shamsuzzaman, Deputy Director of the DAE in Sylhet, said the project aims to connect farmers directly with consumers. Measures will be taken to prevent middlemen and brokers from taking advantage of the system.
Rais Uddin, an agricultural entrepreneur from Golapganj upazila, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that the market should guarantee safe and quality food. He produces organic pineapples and lemons, among other items, and warned that chemically grown products should not be allowed, as they could undermine genuine farmers.
SME product fair to take place April 11–17
A seven-day regional SME product fair will be held from April 11 to 17 at the Sylhet Divisional Stadium ground. The SME Foundation will organize the event in collaboration with the district administration.
The fair aims to promote local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by expanding markets, boosting sales, and raising awareness of domestic products. Stalls will feature handicrafts, leather goods, processed agricultural products, and other local items. Imported products will not be permitted.
Organizers expressed the hope that the fair will open new market opportunities for local entrepreneurs and support the growth of domestic industries.
