A 62-year-old farmer died of heatstroke in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur  on Thursday while being  taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

The deceased, Tunu Akand, was the son of the late Sadeq Akand of Mosalmabad village under Gunaritola Union in the upazila.

According to family members, Tunu Akand fell ill on Wednesday afternoon while drying straw in a field amid intense heat. His condition worsened overnight as he developed severe breathing difficulties.

He was taken to Jamalpur General Hospital early  yesterday. Later, doctors referred him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, but he died on the way.

His grandson, Mamun, said Tunu Akand suddenly became sick while working in the field and continued to suffer from breathing problems until he was taken to hospital.

Tunu Akand is survived by his wife and three sons. His eldest son, Sijan, is employed in Kuwait, while his second son, Sifat, recently returned from abroad. His youngest son, Rifat, who appeared in this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, is currently undergoing treatment for cancer in Dhaka.

The death has left family members and relatives in deep mourning.

Officer-in-Charge of Madarganj Model Police Station, Snehasish Roy, said two people from two different unions in the upazila have died from suspected heatstroke over the past two days.

On Wednesday, Bali Begum, wife of the late Iman Ali of Kukurmari village in Jorkhali Union, reportedly died after suffering heatstroke while drying straw in a field.

The two deaths have raised concerns over the impact of the ongoing heatwave on outdoor workers and farmers in the region.
