Gas cylinder blast in Bhasan Char: Death toll rises to 5

  • Currently, two people undergoing treatment
  • Sohel suffered burns on 52% of his body

The death toll in the gas cylinder blast at Bhashan Char Rohingya camp in Noakhali rose to five as one more succumbed to their injuries at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Sohel, 6, son of Azizul Haque.

Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Director Brigadier General Shameem Ahsan said: "Another child who was undergoing treatment at CMCH has died after being burnt in a fire at the Rohingya camp in Bhasan Char. Sohel, suffered burns on 52% of his body. A total of five Rohingya children have died. Currently, two people are under treatment.”

The other four deceased are Rosmina, 5, Robi Alam, 5, Sohel, 5, Mubassara, 4, and Rasel, 3.

Seven people were brought to the hospital with burn injuries, but two of them are alive now.

On Saturday, nine people were injured when a gas cylinder exploded at the Rohingya camp in the Bhasan Char area. 

Of them, seven were taken to CMCH for treatment, where Rasel, 3, succumbed to his injuries on that day.

The remaining six were admitted to the burn and plastic surgery ward of CMCH. Of these, one child died on Saturday, two on Monday, and another on Wednesday.

Amena Khatun, 24, and Zubaida, 22, are currently undergoing treatment in the accident. Amena Khatun suffered 8% and Zubaida 25% burns.
